Here's the description from their site...

The Houston TranStar Automatic Vehicle Identification (AVI) traffic monitoring system is used to collect real-time information showing current travel conditions on Houston area freeways and high occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes. This information is provided to personnel within the Houston TranStar Center for use in detecting freeway congestion. This travel information is also provided to the public through media reports, displays on selected roadside electronic message signs, and on the Houston TranStar Web Site.

:There is an interestng write up over on /. ([ www.slashdot.org ]) concearning the development of smart roads in Denver, CO. Evidently, they are employing the use of electronics into the roadway that is able to count the volume of cars, traffic density, average speed, etc.. It then creates a real time traffic report that is available in several formats. One of which is friendly to mobile internet, and another in java. Pretty interesting concept. I wonder how many decades it will be before we see a wide implementation of these technologies. The ongoing construction project [ http://www.trexproject.com/ ] can be seen. You can also click on the link to see the Flash version [ http://www.trexproject.com/trex_channels/maps/realtime.asp ] as well as the current traffic in Denver.
